Explore History At Fort Knox This Spring

Just because service members receive military discounts for airline tickets does not mean they always have a destination in mind. Military families should consider a family-friendly vacation at Fort Knox. They will acquire historical knowledge regarding the American military and financial system while exploring part of Kentucky.
Fort Knox is located south of Louisville and serves as a U.S. Army post. For almost 70 years, it was home to the U.S. Army Amor Center and School and the Army and Marine Corps conducted M1 Abrams main battle tank training there. The nearly 110,000-acre base is now home to the Army Human Resources Center of Excellence. It is one of just three Army posts with an on-base high school.
Military families can combine their discount airline tickets to Kentucky with low-priced accommodations. The Holiday Inn Express Newgarden Inn is one of four Fort Knox IHG Army hotels located on-post, just 30 minutes from Louisville International Airport. Rooms feature refrigerators, microwaves, and cooktops and military personnel have access to the base fitness, recreation, and dining facilities. Complimentary breakfast is provided and on-post restaurants include Gallotta’s Italian Grill and Rocker II NCO Club.
General George Patton Museum, located on base, chronicles the career of General George S. Patton and the history of the U.S. Army Calvary and Armored forces. Since 1937, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has been operating the onsite Bullion Depository, which holds 5,046 tons of gold bullion. Tours are not permitted but pictures can be taken from outside the area.
This week, Fort Knox opens its newly renovated welcome center offering maps of the installation and onsite historic trails and information regarding area restaurants and leisure activities. Visiting military families should stop by the center before exploring the base. Click here to find a military discount airline ticket to Louisville for each member of the family.
